The spirit

Menorca is not as popular as some of the other Balearic or Canary Islands - and that makes it an excellent choice if you are looking for a peaceful vacation! Quiet, charming, warm, very beautiful.

Menorcans are ultra friendly. They want to make sure you have a great time. There are also friendly hints - here and there -  that you should act in a dignified manner so other visitors may also enjoy their vacation.

Accommodation

There are lots of good quality hotels, villas and self catering apartments. During my visit in March '99, many hotels and apartments were being re-decorated - in readiness for the Summer Season.

The Island

No matter where you stay, you are only minutes away from the sea. Menorca is around 47 km long. Lush green vegetation and appealing hills are everywhere. Driving around the Island is a real pleasure - discovering countless coves, super sandy beaches, farms and little villages.

If you are there for one week, there's plenty of time to explore at a leisurely pace. Apart from visiting towns and villages, you can take part in activities - from golf to watersports. Walking is also most rewarding if you enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of nature. The air is fresh and unpolluted.

If you are there just for the sun tan, that's fine too.

A visit to Mahon (or Mao) - the capital - wouldn't be complete without visiting the markets. Also, stroll across the wonderful harbour.  At the other end of the Island is Ciutadella, with its majestic Cathedral.

If you like food and drink, there's plenty. Tapas bars and restaurants are scattered all over. If you are going on a self-catering basis, here's a tip to cut your food and drink costs by upto 40% : shop where the locals shop - at big supermarkets, not the mini mercados.

Children and groups

Children are definitely most welcome here and they will have a great time. If you like noisy nightlife, there are better places to go. Discos and night bars are more subdued than other islands.

How to get there

You can make independent travel arrangements or book through one of the regular tour operators. if you travel off-peak season, it's possible to pick up good late deals.

Verdict : A beautiful island for a peaceful vacation.
